Medical Marijuana Patients in Florida Can Now Re-Certify Via Telemedicine

By Naomi C. Abrams

UPDATE: Telemedicine services have been extended for medical marijuana re-certifications until June 30,2020. Patients are able to check their expiration date through State OMMU.

Worldwide concerns of COVID-19 are changing the way the medical industry operates, and the medical marijuana community is no exception.

Telemedicine has come to the forefront as a way to spare medical marijuana patients from making risky trips to the doctor’s office to renew their medical marijuana license.

There are now more than 325,000 Floridians with active medical marijuana cards, and more than 2,500 doctors in the state that are certified to recommend medicinal cannabis.

Fluent Cannabis is going to great lengths to ensure that patients are able to have access to their meds safely and effectively during these uncertain times, with curbside pickup and drive-thru pickup available at several locations.

Strict cleaning practices and social distancing measures have been implemented at all locations, as well.

Telemedicine Enables Patients To Renew Medical Cards From Home

On March 26, 2020, Surgeon General Dr. Scott A. Rivkees signed off on Emergency Order 20-002. This Emergency Order issued by the Florida Department of Health is temporarily allowing Florida medical marijuana patients to complete their follow-up visits through Telemedicine.

This means patients can be re-certified for another 7 months by their medical marijuana physician without having to leave home. The original Emergency Order has currently been extended until May 31, 2020 thanks to the new Emergency Order 20-007.

What This Means For You

If you are a current medical marijuana cardholder, you can use your smartphone or webcam-equipped computer to schedule your Telemedicine follow-up with your medical marijuana physician.

As long as they have conducted your in-person exam within the last 30 weeks, you do not need to leave the comfort of your own home to re-certify. Telemedicine cannot be used to conduct the initial visit, as the order applies to follow-up exams only.
