What people have said about GetFluent Reading (previously called SCANiT)"SCANiT is really, really good. I'm very impressed with it. The children love it - they see it as a challenge. I use it with children who are weak at spellings - they each have their own spellings list."Victoria College Prep School, Jersey "This is a very useful program for students whose visual memory needs to be developed, such as Specific Learning Difficulties spectrum (dyslexia)." SchoolZone "A very specialised piece of software that really does improve reading speed and scanning. It's so flexible .... it's really good." SENCo, John Cleveland College, Leicester "Even young children with Special Educational Needs should be able to use the program on their own with very little initial instruction." SchoolZone Evaluation "The children took to the format of the program readily and found it easy to use from the outset. They are very keen to beat the system and delight in reducing the flash time to its fastest: this keeps them interested and, as with all learning at its best, they are assimilating and improving their reading skills without really knowing it! I am most interested in the program as a tool to help children read ahead - a skill that is needed by all to become fluent readers. The phrases in the wordstores really do help improve abilities to scan and store a succession of words." Lanherne Montessori Primary School, Devon "Differentiation is SCANiT's great strength. It enables the tutor to tailor the exercises/programmes to a student's needs (e.g. flashes/length of time the student sees a word or phrase). Consolidation is a necessary element in a student's learning. Since the programmes for each student are individualised, the tutor can revisit and consolidate for helical learning." Littleheath School, Essex "I have been using Scanit plus for the last month with my severely dyslexic son. Already I am seeing an improvement in his memory retention and fluency in reading .... we have been very excited by this programme at home, using it daily. I am an inclusion manager/senco at a large Junior school with 30% SEN pupils so have had experience of using a number of ICT SEN programmes. My son's particular problems are linked to memory retention and fluency. I don't know other programmes that concentrate on this." (March 2007) "Differentiation is SCANiT's great strength. Littleheath School, Essex "After initial improvements in word decoding skills, many dyslexic pupils seem to plateau on general reading skills. Their reading of text is often slow and inaccurate. I use this programme to help develop speed and therefore fluency and accuracy seems to develop alongside. The program's method of decreasing the flash time (down to about one third of a second), for words and phrases forces the pupil to take in more visual information at a glance. I can't think of any other equipment that could help in this way. The pupils are motivated to reach the target time and are continually challenging themselves. I use the program with pupils of all ages including adults." Teacher, Hillfield Dyslexia Trust, Cheltenham "It could be used in all schools, both for SEN pupils and for mainstream teaching... " UK National Literacy Association Review "Our class uses SCANiT between 5 to 10 minutes daily, usually in groups of 2 or 3, as reinforcement for other literacy programmes. The children are especially motivated when the wordstore contains words from their reading schemes." Welsh House Farm Primary School, Birmingham "SCANiT from Maia increases reading for accuracy. The user is logged on and it speeds them up as they succeed. At first they see flashed up an isolated word that is very different from a choice list - as they get better, the discriminators become more subtle and sentences are used instead of words. I have been recommending SCANiT a lot recently - there is a real interest in improving reading accuracy at present." Consultant, British Dyslexia Society "The children like the immediate feedback on the results screen - they can see that they are improving. We have found a distinct reading improvement along with improved accuracy of word recognition. Additionally, their spelling improves as a result of using the type-back option." Chudleigh Primary School, Devon Even young children with Special Educational Needs should be able to use the program on their own with very little initial instruction." SchoolZone Evaluation "...a genuinely useful tool for improving scanning, a reading skill that all children need to acquire, but which isn't necessarily explicitly taught or measured."
